<image:title>Projects - Kitchen</image:title>
<image:caption>This traditional late 1950s house was built by the current Owners’ grandfather. The last renovation occurred in the late 1990s. The Owners call this house a party house because there are either two people in the house or twenty. With all the extended family, the Owners needed a bigger kitchen, better flow to the house, more natural light, and a deck to enjoy the scenic backyard. The renovation included a new kitchen, dining room, library, family room, TV room, and deck using thermally modified wood. Prior to the renovation there were at least five different types of flooring. All the flooring was removed and replaced with wire brushed hickory wood flooring to bring consistency throughout the house. The renovation included replacing all the windows with large sliders to maximize natural light and views to the backyard. The intent was to open up the rooms and the views but not have a completely open floor plan. This required two steel beams twenty one feet long which were wrapped in drywall to form a black bulkhead. The bulkhead visually ties the rooms together and helps to frame views to the backyard. Lighting was also used to reinforce this theme. The theme of “framing the view” was also incorporated on the deck using an exposed steel beam.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Porch Poolhouse</image:title>
<image:caption>The home owner wanted a space to overlook the existing pool, in the backyard, and a place for swimmers to change clothes. The Poolhouse Porch provides a bathroom for changing and a porch area for eating and relaxing under cover. The porch is located adjacent to the kitchen and can be used for outdoor dining. Lighting is provided so the space can be used in the evening.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - House on the Water - Proposed Schematic Design</image:title>
<image:caption>The home owners wanted an idea to renovate the existing house located on waterfront property. This design exploited the views to the water by maximizing the number and size of windows. A two car garage was added to the front of the house and the existing garage was converted to living space. The flat roofs were retained so additional views of the water could be enjoyed from the bedrooms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Car Barn 01</image:title>
<image:caption>The home owners had inherited an antique pickup truck. They needed a space to preserve and enjoy the truck. The Car Barn provides this space with views of the truck from outside and inside. The space is also used as a workshop and hang out area for the family. The neighborhood’s traditional architectural aesthetic is maintained on the exterior, but provides a contemporary style on the inside.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Dining Area</image:title>
<image:caption>This Washington, D.C. row house had a small kitchen with little work space and storage. The existing porch blocked most of the natural light entering the dining room. The project removed the existing porch, added a new dining area and small deck to the back of the house and converted the existing dining room into a spacious and functional kitchen with a hidden pantry. The new dining area has large windows and a sliding door flooding the space with natural light which works its way into the kitchen and living room at the front of the house. The existing kitchen was converted to a half bath and laundry area. General Contractor: J&L Company</image:caption>
